Change

Change

I had the the pleasure of spending the morning at the The Scope It Out 5K race in the South Side. It was an honor to be invited back to lead the warm up for the third year. A lot of the participants that run or walk are those who have survived colon cancer or are friends and families of survivors as well as those who have lost loved ones to the disease and those there to support the cause. It was great to have a few FitHouse peeps in the mix!

Looking around and seeing that those that have been affected come in all ages and genders was a reminder of the importance of being preventative, not for just this disease but so many others. What does that mean?!?! Well, getting regular check ups and making sure to hit your routine visits is definitely the first way. Beyond that our lifestyle is one of the biggest things that we can control in the prevention of so many diseases.

This week one of the conversations that seemed to come up with many people was about change, either in their lives or someone they know and care about. Change is NOT easy, but often change is necessary if we want to attain something greater. Change helps us to grow, to be better, to feel better. Change often means doing something that we don’t feel comfortable with, something we may not be good at or may have to work harder at.

Often we think about change and we want change until we come face to face with the effort and sometimes we are not 100% sure of the outcome that change will bring. That can be completely scary. What would happen if you started a new positive habit, changed a bad habit, changed a circumstance that wasn’t serving your true needs, changed your attitude, changed your lifestyle to make you healthier?  Making the choice to change and actually taking the steps to change can take a lot of effort! Change is HARD!

Timing can be a big part in making changes. When we have a lot going on in our lives, a lot on our plate or a lot inside our heads, the effort to change, incorporate new behaviors and establish new “rules” can be overwhelming. In some cases it actually takes hitting bottom, being fed up or being miserable to make a change. It’s easy to keep pushing change aside and waiting for that “right time.” and sometimes the right time is necessary.

There are however  a few things in life that we need to move to the front burner and realize that the “right time” may be too late or may never actually come. When it comes to our health hitting bottom is not a good place to be.  There are a few things in life that can actually buy us time and energy and taking care of our health is one of them! Our health is EVERYTHING. When we lose our health we lose a lot.

Maybe some of you have a lifestyle change that you need to make to feel better and be healthier, maybe you have someone close to you that needs to make a change. When it comes to diet and exercise There often seems to be a stigma that there are two sides, the side that likes to exercise and eat the right things and the side that doesn’t. The side that finds it easy and the side that does not.  Routine makes things easier!

I had a great conversation today with someone about exercise. She said you know it’s funny I have reached a point where it’s not really mentally hard to exercise anymore, it’s almost harder when I don’t! That’s because she has made it a habit! It has become part of her routine and now she reaps the benefits and realizes that she feels better on the days when she does than on the days that she doesn’t. But that does not happen overnight and it still does not mean that there are days when you don’t feel like it. We ALL have the days where we have to remind ourselves that the effort is well worth the outcome, myself included. Sometimes when you have spent 10 hours at the gym motivating others with their health and fitness it’s hard to find the 11th hour to focus on your own. We get it! Some days the motivation is not there you have to take action to find it.  I hopped onto Facebook today and saw this from one of our Facebook members

“Today was one of those days that I didn’t want to get out of bed…I was tired, had a headache, it was rainy..but I showed up anyways and it’s always worth it. Thanks for a great kick start to my Sunday!”

Contrary to what a lot would like to believe, making the choice to exercise can be hard for all of us. Eating the right things is a challenge for everyone sometimes. We don’t have to be perfect, we should enjoy life and the things that we truly love. Being comfortable is nice! Exercise can often take us to an uncomfortable place especially if it is something that is new to us.

Forming new habits is HARD, change is HARD, being uncomfortable is HARD. Trying new foods can be hard, changing our lifestyle can be hard. Change takes effort! Your mindset is huge!!! The hardest part of change is making the decision to change, taking the steps that are necessary to to so and keeping your mind right! It is a constant effort and it is not always a straight road. Sometimes there are setbacks, there will be challenges, you won’t be perfect! Baby steps in the right direction DO matter! If you stay consistent, habits will form, things will get easier and the change becomes a way of life!

If you need to make a change look around you and see who can help support you, if someone around you wants to make a change how can you support them? Finding a cheering squad or being a part of one for someone else can be one of the best contributors to success. It you are trying to make a change don’t give up, don’t sell yourself short and remember that change can be be gorgeous in the end!
