Invest in Yourself

Invest in YourselfI recently listened to an interview with the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Anaheim Ducks, Mark Fitzgerald. He moved here from Canada a year or two ago to take over this role in Anaheim. When he started, the Ducks had one of the highest injury rates in the league. His top goal was to change this. Can you guess what the number one thing was that he changed???? Nope, it had nothing to do with their exercise program and it had everything to do with their diets! He said that they were eating like crap!

When he described their diets, well, unfortunately they sounded like what the norm is for most of America!  Chocolate chip cookies and chocolate milk were one of their staple snacks when traveling via airplane to another city the day before a game.  Fitzgerald was on a mission and changed all of this very quickly!   In one year’s time guess what happened?!?!?! They were on the top 10 list for the lowest injury rates in the league…damn! In one year’s time they went from one of the most injured teams to one of the least injured teams in the league.

Injuries can occur for various reasons but so many times people overlook the power of their nutrition and pain in the body. When we exercise, when our bodies are stressed, when we don’t get enough sleep, these things all cause the body to break down. The food that we put into our bodies helps our bodies to repair. Things like sugar, saturated fat, alcohol and processed foods all cause inflammation in the body, joint pain and slow recovery, if any recovery at all.  Foods that are high in antioxidants can actually decrease inflammation in the body and expedite healing. The more that the body is broken down, the more stressed the body is, or the more the immune system is weakened, the more important it is to make sure that you are feeding your body the proper foods for recovery! If it comes from the ground, a tree, a plant or a healthy protein source then it is probably a good choice! Feed your body with the fuel that it needs to live the way you want to!

FitHouse Takes Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis

Join us for a special workout and fundraiser dedicated to two of our own FitHouse members, the Belfiore’s, in hopes to raise awareness and support for Joe and Owen and the entire community. Click the picture and link above for more information on how Joe and Owen are taking steps with Pittsburgh to raise awareness. Any type of donation is appreciated.

DATE TBA

“As most of you know already, this is a personal goal for our family because the effects of Crohn’s have touched us. It has been over three years since Owen had his bowel resection surgery and since then he has been blessed by good health and great care! Please help us join the fight to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s research! My family and friends will be participating in the Take Steps Walk in Pittsburgh this coming June, and our goal is to raise over $5000. Please help if you can. Join the fight to find a cure for Crohn’s!”

Regards,

Joe & Owen Belfiore
