Excuses are the words we use to fill the gaps between wanting something and achieving something. One of the things that kept resurfacing last weekend is this thing called “Head Trash”
We ALL have it, some of us and sometimes more than others!!! It’s easy to look around and find excuses about why it’s so much easier for everyone else, the time isn’t right, I’ll start next week, they are younger, they are older, I’m not as strong, I’m not cut out for that, I will make a fool of myself etc. etc. That head trash is what keeps us from being who we are capable of being, achieving what we want and reaching our full potential. One of the biggest reasons that I exercise is that it helps me to get rid of this head trash. There are days when I too don’t feel like it, but I DO feel like feeling good, I DO feel like having energy, I DO feel like being more focused and I do know it’s what I need to do, kind of like brushing my teeth.
One of the things that has always helped me clear my head trash is running. Running is one of those things, just like most exercise, that if you stop doing it, it gets hard, it feels uncomfortable! It is also harder when your body is tired and your mind is tired. In my journey this past year one of the things that I have struggled with is making the time to run as much as I would like. My two biggest priorities have been to keep serving at my best while getting my business up and running, staying connected to my kids and family through it all and not losing myself emotionally and socially in the process, I guess that makes 3!
Running used to take place in the earliest hours of the day opposite my strength and resistance days and sometimes I’d sneak in 20 minutes at other times of the day. I remember a time a few years ago when nothing would stop a run, rain, cold, snow, heck I even ran 6 or 7 months pregnant and in costume (you fast feet running club members can attest to that). I loved how I felt, I loved the person that I was the energy that I had, I loved the feeling of balance that it gave me, mind and body. The past 8 months my most of my early hours have been replaced with coaching and training. I love this role but it has meant that workouts are squeezed in when i get thirty minutes here and there and running has become a not so frequent occurrence. It was easy to use the winter and the weather as an excuse to stay indoors because it was a bit more comfortable! The less I ran the more uncomfortable it got.
One of the things I can hear Todd Durkin saying over and over is “Remember WHO you are, remember Why you do what you do.” It is so easy in life to be overcome by the things happening in our lives. It is easy to allow ourselves to react to the events in our life and lose sight of the person that we are, what makes us tick, what makes us happy, what makes us feel strong. It is easy to lose sight of the why.
Sunday is the one day weekly that I have attempted to keep running on the schedule. With the warm weather this week I was really looking forward to getting out for a long run this weekend. My body and mind were both up for the challenge. Mother nature must have had an idea of what I needed this AM. I needed to be faced with a situation that would challenge me to “Remember WHO I am.” Before I realized how hard it was raining, I got up, threw my clothes on and got my playlist ready. My plan was to take the girls to faith formation and then hit the trail for a 5 miler. As we headed toward St. Ben’s the rain got heavier and the idea of heading home and hitting the treadmill was sounding better and better. I dropped the girls and knew what I needed to do, I needed to hit the trail. I needed to remind myself that I can and I will, I needed to remind myself that sometimes it’s good and even fun to be uncomfortable, I needed to remind myself that I am stronger than my excuses, and I needed to remind myself that I was a girl who would run in the rain!!!
I see this girl in so many of you! I see her here sometimes and then I see her go away. I have also heard the words, “I am not strong enough to do what you girls do,” and, “I want to come but I am not good enough yet, maybe someday.” That is the “head trash” that we tell ourselves. On the contrary I have also seen the person walk through the door who was not strong, they were scared, they felt like they were not good enough yet, but they didn’t let the head trash talk them out of it! They took the first uncomfortable step, they believed in who they were and who they strive to be. They don’t regret that first step, they don’t regret feeling uncomfortable, they have created healthy habits, they are not perfect but they are so much stronger inside and out and they work at being their best.
I share this post because I am no different than you!!!! The FitHouse team is no different than you!!!!! We all have challenges, we all have fears, we all have head trash. I want to remind you to “Remember WHO you are.” Remember when you felt your best and remind yourself of what you need to do to be that person. It may mean being uncomfortable, it may mean changing some habits, it may mean getting rid of some excuses and head trash. Our lives change, our circumstances change, time changes our circumstances, but through it all we have to remember WHO we are, Why we do what we do and what we need to do to get rid of the head trash that tells us otherwise!!!!! REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!!!!!

My start in fitness and why I can help you
I started working at Bally total fitness in 1999 as a sales employee. I was overweight and unhappy with the direction of my life. So I decided to do something about it. I hired a personal trainer. When I started with the trainer I weighed in at 268 pounds. Six months later with a lot of hard-work I was 199 pounds. After losing that weight I decided I found my calling in life, to become a personal trainer. From day one I happened to become very successful. I’m a people person. I love being around people and I love helping them. All of my clients have been able to relate to my story.
Earlier in my life I struggled with my weight and self-esteem. The highest I’ve ever weighed was 300 pounds. I’ve been through many trials and tribulations but because of my will to succeed and survive, I always came out on top. I’ve tried to instill those same traits into people I’ve worked with and in my writings. I know the feeling of being uncomfortable in your own body. I know how it feels to be depressed and feel despair. I’ve worked with people that were going through divorces, having image issues, and people that were morbidly obese. Believe me I’m not a clinical psychologist but I know how to listen. I have given much advice that has helped my clients change their lives forever.
My personal motto
Get stuff done everyday by taking action in life. Train properly. Eat nourishing foods. Get adequate sleep and surround yourself with winners.
